What is addiction?

October 3, 2017

The textbook definition of addiction is: a chronic disease that motivates abuse of substances despite negative physical, social, and emotional consequences. Addiction often includes relapse and remission.

However, addiction is more complicated than this textbook definition. Addiction is not always genetic or found in low-income neighborhoods. There is a growing trend of addiction being treated among the general and affluent populations as well. Addiction does not discriminate against social statuses, genders, sexes, or the color of your skin.

When trying to get sober, it’s important to focus on biological, psychological, and spiritual aspects of the disease. Addiction isn’t only a biological and psychological disease—it’s spiritual as well. People in recovery may not be using relapse prevention techniques that include all facets of addiction , which is why I believe the rate of relapse is so high.

It’s easy to follow a treatment plan and go through the motions of treatment. But, believing that you have a purpose beyond using may be difficult to accept. What’s more difficult than this belief is getting in touch with your Higher Power, especially if you have been feeling let down lately. When you’re trying to figure out your best course of action, think of different ways you can include biological, psychological, and spiritual therapies in your recovery plan.
