What Does a Panic Attack Feel Like? Signs, Causes, and Coping Tips

A panic attack can feel frightening, especially when it happens unexpectedly. Your heart may start racing, your breathing may become difficult, and you might suddenly feel that something terrible is about to happen. If you’ve experienced this, you may wonder whether you’re having a panic attack or facing a physical health problem.

What Are the Symptoms of a Panic Attack?

A panic attack involves a sudden wave of intense fear or discomfort that reaches its peak within minutes. Symptoms can include a pounding heart, sweating, trembling, dizziness, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, nausea, or tingling sensations.

Some people feel detached from their surroundings or fear losing control. Others worry that they are having a heart attack or might die.

Although panic attacks can feel physically overwhelming, their symptoms can overlap with medical conditions. New, severe, or unexplained chest pain or breathing difficulties should be assessed urgently rather than automatically attributed to anxiety.

Why Do Panic Attacks Happen?

Panic attacks can occur during stressful situations or seemingly out of nowhere. Stress, anxiety, major life changes, and sensitivity to physical sensations may contribute to them.

Sometimes, a person notices a small physical sensation, interprets it as dangerous, and becomes increasingly frightened. That fear can intensify the physical symptoms, creating a cycle that feels difficult to stop.

Experiencing a single panic attack does not automatically mean you have panic disorder. Repeated unexpected attacks followed by persistent worry or avoidance may require further assessment.

What Should You Do During a Panic Attack?

If you recognize a familiar panic response and are not experiencing warning signs of a medical emergency, try to move somewhere safe and remind yourself that intense fear can rise and fall.

Breathe gently and slowly without forcing deep breaths. Notice your surroundings, feel your feet against the floor, and bring your attention back to what is happening in the present moment.

Avoid fighting every sensation or repeatedly checking whether the panic has disappeared. Give yourself time to settle.

Can Therapy Help With Panic Attacks?

Yes. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help people understand the connection between thoughts, physical sensations, and fear. A therapist can also teach coping strategies and help address the fear of future attacks.

The “National Institute of Mental Health’s guide to panic disorder” (https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/panic-disorder-when-fear-overwhelms) explains symptoms and treatment options.

Panic attacks can be distressing, but effective treatments are available. Seeking professional guidance can help you understand what you’re experiencing and feel more confident managing it.
